Back pain: when movement helps and when to seek advice
Reviewed 21 June 2026 · General information
Many episodes of back pain improve with time and a gradual return to normal activity. Complete rest can make the body feel stiffer and less confident, so comfortable walking, changing position and continuing manageable daily tasks are often useful starting points.
Start below your current limit
Choose movements that feel tolerable and begin with a dose you could repeat later the same day. A small, temporary increase in discomfort does not always mean harm, but symptoms should remain manageable and settle rather than build steadily.
Seek prompt medical assessment when needed
Urgent assessment is important if back pain follows a major injury or is accompanied by new bladder or bowel changes, numbness around the groin, rapidly worsening weakness, fever, unexplained weight loss or severe unrelenting symptoms. If you are uncertain, speak with an appropriate healthcare professional.
A useful next step: An individual physiotherapy assessment can help identify suitable movements and a safe progression based on your symptoms and goals.
